Ashinaga USA is proud to announce our first-ever college graduates! This spring, Daniel Kibuuka and Hilda Nalwanga donned cap and gown to celebrate the momentous occasion. Both from Uganda, Daniel and Hilda have been involved with Ashinaga for many years, so we celebrate their accomplishment with a special appreciation for the long, challenging, and successful journey that they have traveled to this point.

Daniel Kibuuka graduated from Pepperdine University with a bachelor’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communication and a minor in Nonprofit Management. Daniel’s time at Pepperdine was marked by positively impacting his community. Walking campus with Daniel on the eve of his graduation made clear that his impact reached far and wide, from students to faculty and from maintenance staff to administrators. Many expressed appreciation that Daniel had attended Pepperdine rather than other college options, suggesting that his time on campus had improved theirs. As a gifted orator and beloved member of the community, Daniel was chosen as one of three students from the Class of 2018 to give a speech to his graduating classmates. One administrator summed up Daniel’s impact at Pepperdine, saying he has been an “institution-changing” student.

Hilda Nalwanga graduated from Smith College with bachelor’s degrees in Government and African Studies. At Smith, Hilda learned from and contributed to a diverse campus community, graduating with honors. However, Hilda’s work outside of the classroom was as impressive as her GPA: she participated in a selective Smith summer program in Kenya as a freshman, designed and ran two Africa-related conferences, and led the effort to develop a more robust international internship program (for which she was awarded a $7,000 Presidential Innovation Grant). Hilda also contributed significantly to the Smith African and Caribbean Students Association and pioneered new ways for international students to engage with Smith’s Design Thinking Initiative. Just days before Hilda’s graduation, the Dean of Admissions talked about what a great decision it was to admit Hilda to Smith.

Well done, Daniel and Hilda — you are worthy of all this accomplishment.
